S4C’s comprehensive Royal Welsh Show coverage

17 July 2008

S4C will broadcast extensive coverage of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show in Builth Wells to viewers across the UK this week.

Live broadcasts from the Show start at 8.00am on S4C 2 on Sky with coverage of the main ring, followed at 9.00am with coverage of the second ring via the red button service. Viewers of S4C 2 on Virgin and Freeview can access the coverage from 10am.

From 10.00am, S4C Digidol will show a variety of items, with coverage continuing on S4C in the afternoon. There’ll be evening highlights programmes as well as live and on-demand coverage at s4c.co.uk/sioe.

Elen Pencwm will take a break from her farm in Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, Ceredigion, where she has started to breed Welsh Cobs, to re-join S4C’s presentation team on the Showground following the birth of her son, Jona, last year.

Elen, who will report from the sheep competitions, says “I come from an agricultural background and visiting Builth Wells every year was a big part of my upbringing. As I’ve grown older, I’ve noticed the high standard of the products and the animals and I’m surprised each year as the standard continues to grow. This show is Wales’ shop window in the agricultural field and allows people from all over the world to see what we have on offer. And of course, after a full day’s filming, it’s nice to put the world in its place with old friends.”

Elen will join the presentation and commentary team, which includes Nia Roberts, Dai Jones, Nia Parry, Mari Grug, Morgan Jones, Wyn Gruffydd, Linda Griffiths, Bethan Gwanas and Edward Tudor Jones.

Highlights of the week include the Welsh Cobs steeds competition, the main competitions for the Welsh horses, the Sheep dog trials and the pinnacle of the week according to Elen, the Champion of Champions competition.

“For the first time this year, I’ll be filming with the sheep farmers, and it will be very exciting to learn more about the different breeds. These farmers are armed with more knowledge and information than a library-full of books and it’ll be nice to learn from the masters and have some fun at the same time,” she says.

And after last year’s heavy rain, Elen very much hopes the stormy weather stays away during this show.

“We can do the research, arrange the interviews, but one thing we cannot guarantee is the weather. But it doesn’t matter what the weather will be like this year because we’ll be on hand to present the coverage, come rain or shine!” adds Elen.
