Tribute to Ray Gravell

01 November 2007

Ray Gravell made a huge contribution to S4C programming over the Channel’s 25-year history.

Ray commentated on the first-ever Welsh language TV broadcast of an international rugby match, Wales v England, in February 1983 alongside Huw Llywelyn Davies.

Ray was also famous as a pitchside reporter. His warmth, empathy and humour brought out the best in the rugby players he interviewed.

Ray made numerous guest appearances in a range of TV dramas, and was also an accomplished actor. He was a popular presenter too, on both radio and television.

Earlier this year, Ray appeared in the S4C choral competition Codi Canu, as a captain for a choir of supporters from the Scarlets, the rugby team so close to his heart. His boundless enthusiasm and energy inspired the choir – and everyone who met him.

Iona Jones, S4C’s Chief Executive said, “Everyone in S4C has been deeply saddened by the news of Ray Gravell’s death and we all extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family. Grav was a unique character – warm, genuine and a proud Welshman. He played an important role in S4C’s programmes over the past 25 years – as a commentator, presenter and actor – and he will be greatly missed.”
