Fresh nomination for Beryl

11 February 2008

Joanna Quinn’s multi award-winning S4C film about a larger than life, middle- aged heroine called Beryl has been shortlisted for a British Animation Award.

Dreams and Desires – Family Ties (Beryl, Y Briodas a’r Fideo), a co-production between S4C and Joanna’s company, Beryl Productions International, has already won a raft of awards, including the animation industry’s top prize, the Cartoon D’Or.

To be shortlisted in the Craft Award section at the prestigious BAA ceremony, held in London on 13 March, is another major accolade for the ten-minute hand-drawn film, made by the twice Oscar-nominated Joanna.

In the Craft section, sponsored by Tandem Films, Dreams and Desires – Family Ties is up against The Pearce Sisters, directed by Luis Cook and produced by Aaardman Animations, and Adjustment, directed by Ian Mackinnon and produced by The Royal College of Art.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s Director of Commissioning, said: “We’re delighted that this wonderful production has been shortlisted at the British Animation Awards ceremony. Beryl has captured the hearts of animation fans all over the world and this is reflected in the huge array of awards the production has won. S4C is proud to have supported such a successful animation, created and produced in Wales.”

Editor’s notes:

1. This is the third S4C film to feature Beryl, a frustrated yet optimistic wife and mother who is intent on embracing change, now that her grown-up children have flown the nest. In this film, Beryl attends the wedding of a family friend, to record the event for posterity. Things go horribly wrong, however, when Beryl’s cinematic enthusiasm and video diaristic approach clash with the expectations of the wedding party.

2. Dreams and Desires – Family Ties has already won over 25 different awards, including: European Cartoon D’Or Best Film, Cartoon Forum Pau, France; Audience prize - Best Festival Film, Annecy France; Grand Prix Best Film of Festival, Zagreb AniFest Croatia; Grand Prix Best Short Film and China International Animation Festival Shanghai
