S4C nets broadcasting rights for Poland v Wales

09 February 2009

S4C will broadcast the Poland v Wales friendly football international live from Portugal on Wednesday 11 February, the Channel has announced.

S4C will be the only channel to provide free-to-air terrestrial coverage of the match that is so important in Wales’ preparations for the two crucial World Cup qualifiers coming up in March and April.

The channel’s flagship football show Sgorio will be at the Vila Real De Santo Antonio Stadium in the Algarve, Portugal from 5.00pm for the match build-up, ready for the 5.15pm kick off.

S4C will also broadcast highlights of the game later that evening on an additional Sgorio programme at 11.05pm.

The match will be the last chance for Wales national manager John Toshack to look at his playing options before the two vital home matches in Group 4 of the World Cup qualifiers home against Finland on 28 March and Germany on 1 April.

The match is technically a home fixture for Poland as the Polish squad has come together in the Algarve to prepare for their forthcoming qualifiers against Northern Ireland and San Marino.

S4C’s Content Editor, Sport, Geraint Rowlands said: “We are delighted to have won the rights to broadcast the match live on S4C. Football followers will appreciate the opportunity to watch the match free-to-air on terrestrial television all over the UK. The match is vital preparation for the qualifiers against Finland and Germany that Sgorio will also cover in its international highlights programmes.”

Sgorio’s presenting team for the Poland v Wales match will be Gareth Roberts and Dai Davies in the studio, Nic Parry and Meilyr Owen in the commentary box and Morgan Jones as touchline reporter.

Sgorio’s Monday evening show (9 February, 10.00pm) will have a full match preview, with former internationals John Hartson and Dai Davies joining the Sgorio team to assess Wales’ chances.
