S4C awards golf scholars

14 October 2009

Two promising young Welsh golfers have won scholarships from S4C to help them further develop their sporting careers.

Gemma Bradbury, 18, of Cowbridge and Rhys Pugh, 16, from Pontypridd received their scholarships at The Celtic Manor Resort in a special evening hosted by Golf Union Wales.

Gemma has represented Wales in the European Team Championships 2009 and in the Girls’ Home Internationals. She is currently a member of Cottrell Park and the Vale of Glamorgan Golf Clubs.

Rhys, a member of the Vale of Glamorgan and Southerndown Golf Clubs, has just been awarded Amateur Golfer of the Year by Golf Union Wales. He was also the youngest ever player to be selected to represent Wales in the Men’s Home Internationals in 2009 at the age of 15.

A panel of judges from Golf Development Wales and S4C awarded the scholarships, which will help fund coaching and travel costs, new equipment and competition entry fees.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s Director of Commissioning, said, “The scholarships reflect S4C’s commitment to golf, to sport in general and to major Welsh events as we look forward to The 2010 Ryder Cup, held for the first time in Wales, at The Celtic Manor Resort.”

The Channel sponsors the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe, one of Ryder Cup Wales Summer of Golf events.
