Jonathan kicks off S4C’s 2010 rugby season

02 February 2010

The hit entertainment show, Jonathan returns to S4C on Friday 5 February at 21.30 as rugby icon Jonathan Davies and his team kick off the 2010 rugby international season in style.

The popular show, which sees top celebrities join Jonathan, Nigel Owens, Rowland Phillips and new presenter, Alex Jones for sketches, competitions and light-hearted banter, will be broadcast throughout the Six Nations campaign.

Dwayne Peel and Julian Lewis Jones, who stars in Clint Eastwood’s new film, Invictus, are the guests on the first programme, while Nigel Owens is the focus of a powerful, hour-long profile earlier in the evening at 20.25.

In the programme, Nigel Owens, the referee – ranked in the top three worldwide – talks openly about his career, including the Bloodgate scandal, and his personal life. He’s overcome bulimia, depression and attempted suicide as part of coming to terms with his sexuality.

Nigel will be centre stage during the Six Nations opening weekend as he officiates Scotland’s tie against France, while Y Clwb Rygbi’s expert team of commentators and pundits will be covering Wales’ match against England at HQ on 6 February.

Rugby legend Gareth Edwards, former Wales captain, Gwyn Jones, ex rugby internationals Derwyn Jones and Brynmor Williams join commentator Huw Llywelyn Davies and presenters Gareth Roberts and Sarra Elgan to offer expert analysis and views.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s Director of Commissioning says, “Jonathan is an unmissable part of the pre-match build-up to the Six Nations Championship, with Jonathan Davies and the team taking an up-beat and light hearted look at the competition.

“Coupled with a fascinating profile of Nigel Owens and comprehensive broadcasts from the Six Nations, S4C offers unrivalled coverage of one of the major highlights of the Welsh sporting calendar.”

Jonathan Davies adds, “It’s great to be able to lead people into the Six Nations games as the competition is so special. There’ll be a lot of taking the mick as banter among the crew has always been popular."
