12 nominations for S4C programmes at Celtic Media Festival 2012

15 February 2012

Three S4C dramas - the film Patagonia, one-off drama Burton: Y Gyfrinach? and drama series Alys - have been nominated in the 2012 Celtic Media Awards, along with nine other nominations for the Channel. The annual awards will be held in Derry, Northern Ireland in April.

The film Patagonia, by director Marc Evans and Burton: Y Gyfrinach? (Green Bay) will compete against each other in the Feature Length Drama category

Patagonia - starring Matthew Rhys, Nia Roberts, Matthew Gravelle and Duffy - follows two journeys by two women, one in Wales and one in Patagonia. It was first broadcast on S4C on New Year's Day 2012.

Richard Harrington portrays actor Richard Burton in the drama Burton: Y Gyfrinach? which throws new light on the relationship between the world-famous actor and his eldest brother Ifor (Dafydd Hywel). The drama was one of the highlights of S4C’s Christmas 2011 schedule.

The powerful series Alys, by award-winning writer Siwan Jones, has been nominated in the Drama Series category. The drama follows single mother Alys (Sara Lloyd Gregory) as she leaves her troubled past in the city and tries to provide a better life for her son in a quiet town in west Wales.

For the second consecutive year, the series Ras yn Erbyn Amser (P.O.P.1) has been nominated in the Sports category. This series follows presenter Lowri Morgan as she takes part in the 3366 Ultra Race in the Arctic Circle.

The first series in 2010, which featured Lowri participating in the Jungle Marathon in the Amazon, won the festival's top prize - Spirit of the Festival - in 2011.

The cariad@iaith:love4language crew are celebrating as their efforts to learn Welsh are recognised with a nomination in the Factual Entertainment category. The series, produced by Fflic, followed eight celebrities - Melanie Walters, Colin Charvis, Helen Federer, Josie D'Arby, Lembit Opik, Matt Johnson, of GLC and Sophie Evans - as they spent a week learning Welsh.

Another two friends who are celebrating is Rapsgaliwn, the world's best rapper, and Mistar Urdd as they’re nominated in the Marketing Campaign category for the new version and video of the song Hei Mister Urdd. The song and video were produced by S4C’s Communications team to promote programmes from the 2011 Swansea Urdd Eisteddfod.

Two Stwnsh programmes have been nominated, including one in the Education category for the second consecutive year. Rhyfedd-OD, produced by Cwmni Da, is a series full of experiments, science and fun facts. The other is the series Jac Russell (Boomerang) which has been nominated in the Children's category.

There are two nominations for S4C in the Entertainment category. The series Côr Cymru 2011, by Rondo, has been nominated along with the mock documentary Wil a Cêt by Cwmni Da.

Another nomination for Cwmni Da comes as comedy series Dim Byd is nominated in the Young People category, and the cartoon comedy Teulu Tomos (Griffilms), which follows the adventures of the Tomos family and their robot, has been nominated in the Animation category.

S4C's Interim Director of Commissioning, Geraint Rowlands says, “Congratulations to all the programmes that have received nominations in the Celtic Media Awards 2012. It has been a big year for drama on S4C and this is reflected in the three nominations for some of the year’s major dramas - Patagonia, Burton and Alys.”
