01 March 2013

Rhys Gwynfor and Osian Huw Williams, and the band Jessop a'r Sgweiri, are the winners of S4C's Cân i Gymru 2013 (Song for Wales) competition with the song Mynd i Gorwen Hefo Alys.

They have won the prize of £3,500 and the opportunity to represent Wales at the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland.

The songwriting competition was held at the Coal Exchange, Cardiff on St David's Day, and broadcast live on S4C with Elin Fflur and Dafydd Du presenting.

The song came top of a shortlist of six after receiving the highest number of votes, combining a viewers' phone vote and votes by a panel of four judges: Lisa Gwilym, Gai Toms, Griff Lynch and Gwilym Dwyfor.

Gaynor Davies, S4C Entertainment Commissioner, says, "Congratulations to Rhys, Osian and Jessop a'r Sgweiri for their fantastic work which has won recognition from S4C viewers and the panel of judges.

"This year, S4C was proud to offer support to the six finalists as they produced their song ready for the competition final. Not only has this enhanced the audiences' experience on competition night but also a valuable experience to the composers who reached the final. Congratulations to them all.

"We were also very pleased to work with Y Selar and BBC Radio Cymru to expand the competition’s support to the Welsh music scene."

As well as choosing the winner of Cân i Gymru 2013, music magazine Y Selar and BBC Radio Cymru both presented awards on the night. A total of £4,000 was presented to musicians who have made an impact on the Welsh music scene this year.

Live and exclusive on the evening, it was announced that Y Bandana has come top in two of Y Selar's 2013 awards categories.

The band from Caernarfon came top in Y Selar's 2013 Live Band category and their song 'Heno yn yr Anglesey' won Song of the Year. Y Bandana was awarded the total prize of £2,000 (£1,000 for each category).

The rest of the Y Selar 2013 winners will be announced during an awards ceremony at Neuadd Hendre, near Bangor, on Saturday 2 March.

Although BBC Radio Cymru's Roc a Phop awards were not held this year, Cân i Gymru and Radio Cymru have worked together to present a £1,000 to the composer/composers who's made a substantial contribution to the Welsh Music Scene.

The winner was chosen by the Cân i Gymru judging panel, and the winner was Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog.

Also, a £1,000 prize was presented to the winners of the Breakthrough Band category in the 2012 Roc a Phop awards. The winners were Sŵnami who also performed live on the night.
