Back from the brink – DCI Mathias makes his return on S4C

29 December 2014

DCI Mathias is back in the much anticipated, long awaited, one-off special episode of Y Gwyll/Hinterland, and S4C on New Year's Day is the place to see it first.

Tune in and turn on the English subtitles on Thursday, 1 January, for a new thrilling mystery of twist and turns in the rugged and remote landscape of Ceredigion. And in this episode, expect to find out more about our hero's dark secrets, and the past he's trying to forget.

Enough tension, thrills and shocks to leave us wanting more as we look forward to the second series in autumn 2015.

"I couldn't wait to get back to it. I was eager to start showing a different side to Mathias and in this one-off episode we find out a lot more about him," says actor Richard Harrington who plays the iconic hero DCI Tom Mathias.

"I got to know a great deal about the character's personal history as we filmed the first series, and as this is gradually revealed, it changes the other characters' perception of him, and the viewers will view him differently too."

With the return of Y Gwyll, Richard Harrington is joined by the core cast of the first series; Mali Harries as DI Mared Rhys; Alex Harries as DC Lloyd Ellis; Hannah Daniel as DS Siân Owens and Aneirin Hughes as Chief Superintendent Prosser.

Weeks have passed since Mathias walked away from his duties in tragic circumstances. The last case saw our hero pushed to the edge, and drove him to seek comfort in the arms of a mother grieving for her murdered daughter. Within hours she was also dead. With her murder on his conscience, the series came to a dramatic climax with Mathias' future hanging in the balance.

Mathias' struggle to differentiate between his professional duties and personal feelings should have left his career in tatters, but Chief Superintendent Prosser has other ideas and calls for his return to investigate an arson attack on an isolated farmhouse that has left a mother and child fighting for their lives.

As the investigation unfolds, Mathias and his team are drawn in to a community of failing farms, festering resentment and long standing feuds. But what is it about this case of a mother and child which draws Mathias in, pulling him back from the brink? Could there be a connection here with his dark and troubled past? We're about to find out more about Mathias and his demons.
