Two S4C documentaries shortlisted for New York International Film and TV Awards

18 February 2015

Two powerful S4C documentaries have been nominated at the 2015 New York Festivals Awards.

The biographical documentary of the late historian Dr John Davies Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies has been nominated in the 'Biography and Profiles' category.

The nomination comes a few days after the death of the great Welsh historian who wrote one of the most comprehensive histories of the Welsh nation, Hanes Cymru - A History of Wales.

Meanwhile, the documentary series Adam Price a Streic y Glowyr has also received a nomination in the 'History and Society' category.

The documentary Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies (a Telesgop production) has already proved successful after being nominated at the BAFTA Cymru awards for best documentary and best director for director Dylan Richards.

Similarly, Adam Price's emotional journey through the year-long Miners' Strike has been praised by the Welsh media and beyond.

Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies will be among 16 nominations in its category and Adam Price a Streic y Glowyr (a Tinopolis production) among 17. The ceremony itself will be held in the USA in April.

Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies will be broadcast as a tribute to the late historian on Sunday 22 February on S4C.

Adam Price's series on the Miners' Strike is currently being aired again as part of S4C's special week of programmes marking 30 years since the end of the strike. The season of programmes will run until 22 February on S4C.

This is the third consecutive year that S4C programmes have been nominated at the festival which celebrates the best in TV and film from over 50 countries.

Documentary Fy Chwaer a Fi (Bulb Films, part of Boom Pictures Cymru) won the Gold Award in the Human Concerns category in 2013. And last year, Taith Fawr y Dyn Bach (Cwmni Da) won the Silver Award in the Human Concerns category and Karen (Cwmni Da) the Bronze Award in the same category.

Llion Iwan, S4C Content Commissioner, Factual Progammes said, "These are two programmes which combine passion and personal vision with a deep understanding of our society and history. The nomination for Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies is a fitting tribute to the historian who died this week. Whatever your opinion on the industrial dispute, Adam Price a Streic y Glowyr proves that the history and tradition of our mining communities is of interest to audiences in Wales and around the world."
