S4C raise £1,400 in support of rugby charity

02 February 2016

S4C is very proud to present a substantial cheque of £1,400 in aid of a rugby charity which supports injured players and their families.

The money was raised in aid of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust through public events and fundraising efforts by the channel's staff during the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust was Chairman Dennis Gethin, who is also President of the WRU.

Dennis Gethin says; "The trust are extremely grateful for the marvellous donation S4C are giving to the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust to aid those rugby players who have suffered catastrophic injuries whilst playing the game they love. The trust was set up to improve the quality of life for those players and their families, and they are without doubt a remarkable group of people and extremely supportive of Welsh Rugby."

One of the fundraising events was S4C's tour to visit five different rugby clubs across Wales to hold a training session led by former Wales internationals followed by an evening of entertainment. The people of Bethesda, Dolgellau, Aberaeron, Newcastle Emlyn and Glanamman were very generous with their contributions during the tour, including a special cheque of £200 donated by Dolgellau Rugby Club.

There were also charity collections at the filming of the S4C series Jonathan and the rugby chat show Cwpan y Byd a Mwy, shown as part of S4C's package of programmes covering the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

This was in addition to a host of fundraising activities held by S4C staff in the channel's offices in Cardiff and Caernarfon.

Ian Jones, S4C Chief Executive says; "On behalf of all the staff at S4C, we are extremely proud to present this cheque to the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust. It is a very worthy cause, and the work they do to support injured players and their families is to be admired. The Rugby World Cup was a major event for S4C in 2015 and it's a source of great pride that we could support the game by raising money for such a good cause."
