Launching S4C's Cân i Gymru 2018 - competition to be held in Pontio, Bangor with a prize of £5,000

09 November 2017

S4C's song-writing competition Cân i Gymru 2018 officially opens today, Thursday, 9 November 2017.

S4C is inviting songwriters to enter their songs for the chance to win £5,000. The closing date for entries is 5 January 2018. More details on how to enter are available at s4c.cymru

The competition will be held on 1 March 2018 at Theatr Bryn Terfel, Pontio, Bangor, with Elin Fflur and Trystan Ellis-Morris presenting the evening.

To mark the launch of the competition, the Heno programme will broadcast live from Pontio, Bangor on Thursday evening, 9 November, where last year's Cân i Gymru winner Cadi Edwards will chat about her experience. The external wall of Pontio will also be lit up with the Cân i Gymru logo.

As in previous years, the winning Cân i Gymru song will be chosen by viewers via a phone vote.

Elen Rhys, S4C Entertainment Content Commissioner says, "We are really looking forward to another exciting competition, and hope that many people will enter songs again this year. It's great that the competition will be held on 1 March. What better way to celebrate St David's Day than with a lively evening of entertainment and some brand new songs in the Welsh language?

"As well as the main prize of £5,000, taking part is an opportunity in itself for musicians and songwriters to record their songs professionally and release them for download and the chance to be played on radio for years to come."
