S4C hit drama shortlisted for Writers’ Guild Award

05 December 2017

S4C hit bilingual crime drama Bang has been shortlisted for a prestigious Writers’ Guild Award, which has been celebrating writers, and writing, since they launched in 1961.

The series, which was shown on S4C in the autumn and is still available as a box-set to watch for free on S4C’s catch-up service at s4c.cymru and BBC iPlayer until 7 January, has been nominated for an award in the Best Long Form TV Drama category.

Bang is produced by Joio and Artists Studio for S4C and is written by BAFTA award-winning author Roger Williams. It follows the story of a young man, Sam, whose life changes when he comes into possession of a gun, and his policewoman sister, Gina, who tries to solve the mystery of who owns the weapon.

The eight-part series is set and shot on location in the community of Port Talbot and the Afan Valley, is directed by Philip John (The Halcyon, Outlander, Downton Abbey) and Ashley Way (Ice, Ripper Street, Stella, Y Streic a Fi) and produced by Catrin Lewis Defis (The Collection, Broadchurch).

S4C's Creative Content Director, Amanda Rees, says: “Congratulations to Roger Williams who is one of our best screenwriters and fully deserves his place on the shortlist. The fact that S4C's content is able to stand alongside some of the most popular series’ of the national networks is something we can be very proud of.

“Although it’s clear to us that there’s talent here in Wales that can compete on the national stage, to gain this recognition by working writers who have selected the nominations in their own field is very special indeed.”

Shortlisted alongside Bang in the Best Long Form TV Drama category are: Line of Duty, Series 4 (Jed Mercurio) and Taboo (Chips Hardy, Steven Knight, Ben Hervey and Emily Ballou).

The awards evening will be held in London on Monday 15 January 2018.
