Fifteen Welsh scriptwriters chosen for masterclasses

May 26 2020

Fifteen Welsh scriptwriters will take part in exclusive story-telling masterclasses thanks to a training partnership between S4C and TAC (Teledwyr Annibynnol Cymru / Welsh Producers' Association).

The fifteen authors, including both new and experienced authors, have a unique opportunity to develop their skills in the company of John Yorke, former Head of Channel Four Drama, Controller of BBC Drama Production and MD of Company Pictures.

With a wealth of experience in the field of television drama, John is considered is one of the UK's foremost experts on story structure and has overseen some of the UK's most popular shows including Life on Mars, EastEnders and Holby City.

Beginning tomorrow (Wednesday 27 May), John will present two sessions over a period of a fortnight. There will be a further session by well-known Welsh drama producer Gethin Scourfield especially about producing drama in Welsh.

The writers will have the opportunity to work together in groups and offer each other feedback in a private forum. They will also have two months' access to the John Yorke Stories website, where they can make the most of the learning materials, discussions and tutorial notes.

The masterclass will be delivered online, giving the participants, who come from all over Wales, the chance to meet and discuss ideas as well as linking up with John and his team.

Luned Whelan, Executive Manager of TAC said: "Organising these sessions under the leadership of a master of his craft like John Yorke is an outstanding addition to the training partnership between TAC and S4C. The appreciation of the opportunity by the delegates has been very encouraging, and it bodes well for the future of high-quality scripting talent in drama and drama documentary. This will reinforce S4C's reputation in these genres, and provide more great viewing for the audience at home.ˮ

Gwenllian Gravelle, Content Commissioner for Drama at S4C and Llinos Wynne, Content Commissioner for Factual S4C, were on the selection panel. Gwenllian said: "The broadcast industry is going through a difficult time, so we are thrilled that S4C and TAC can work together to offer this very special course. It is important that the creative process continues and develops during this challenging period.

"Developing authors is a priority for S4C. John Yorke is very well respected in the world of drama, and this masterclass offers a unique opportunity for our Welsh talent to develop and hone their skills. Opportunities like this do not come along every day."

The John Yorke masterclasses are funded by the S4C and TAC training partnership. Four of the participants have come through Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru's new theatre writers' group, which is supported by S4C.
