Enjoy creating films? Chance to win £1,000 in Hansh short film competition

3 June 2020

Are you passionate about creating films? Hansh is inviting film makers across Wales to take part in the Her Ffilm Fer (Short Film Challenge) later this month.

From Friday 19 June to Sunday 21 June, entrants have a period of 48 hours to create a short original film, in a specific genre, which will be revealed before the start of the challenge.

Some of Wales' best-known drama producers will judge the competition and select the winner, who will be rewarded a prize of £1,000. The films will later be showcased on the Hansh Youtube page. The five judges are:

  • Hannah Thomas – Producer: Craith/Hidden, Under Milk Wood, Becoming Human
  • Euros Lyn – Director: Dr Who, Broadchurch, Y Llyfrgell/The Library Suicides
  • Ed Thomas – Producer: Y Gwyll/Hinterland, Gwaith Cartref, Pen Talar
  • Gwenllian Gravelle – S4C Drama Commissioner, Un Bore Mercher/Keeping Faith producer
  • Rhodri ap Dyfrig – Online Content Commissioner for S4C and Hansh

In the weeks leading up to the challenge, a series of video masterclass sessions will be held by a number of established producers, including Euros Lyn, to demonstrate different filming techniques and to help entrants to make the most of their resources.

Actor Annes Elwy, star of Craith/Hidden and Little Women, will host the competition on Hansh in a series of videos leading up to the big weekend.

Annes Elwy said: "Although the last few months have been tough for everyone, having this time has allowed a lot of people to re-connect with their creative side, or perhaps discover it for the first time. It's going to be exciting to see that creativity come to the fore in films in this competition.

"It's an excellent opportunity for those taking part of course, but it's also a chance for the television and film landscape to discover some exciting new contributors, whose work may not have seen by the right people yet."

Hannah Thomas said: "I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes from this challenge. This is a chance for film producers to allow their imaginations to run free and to create unusual, challenging short films. Good luck to everyone taking part!"

Rhodri ap Dyfrig, S4C Online Content Commissioner, said: "Hansh is a platform which has encouraged and rewarded creativity from the beginning and whatever your level of experience or the resources at your disposal, we are calling on the film producers of Wales to take part in this competition.

"Despite the restrictions of lockdown, we are looking forward to seeing how these unique circumstances can spark imaginations and ideas among our film producers."
