HANSH: Open Call For Short Form Content: April 2018

S4C's content commissioning department welcomes ideas for SHORT FORM SOCIAL MEDIA content aimed at audiences between the ages of 16-34 for HANSH.

The content will be created primarily for social media and published under the HANSH brand on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram.

We expect ideas to demonstrate boldness in style, topic and treatment in order to create an impression which will engage and enthuse online audiences.

What are we looking for?

We are open to a range of ideas but are particularly interested in the following:

  • Contemporary, relatable and snappy comedy. Of particular interest are:
        1. Character comedy;
        2. Piloting brand new talent;
        3. Sketch comedy;
        4. Timely/responsive comedy; trend/newsjacking;
  • Strong and visual factual stories with a big heart, tackling issues which affect the target audience.
      1. The ideas will challenge the viewers expectations and deal with current issues in a direct and uncompromising manner;
      2. We have enough factual content which are based on interview/talking head so we're looking for stories which happen in the moment, on location and which show people engaging with each other. Themes of interest are:
      3. Wales' Lost Voices – Welsh voices that aren't heard often or often enough: the effect of poverty on young people, immigrants to Wales, or special access to refugees and their experiences in Wales;
      4. Bridging Divides – content which aims to create spaces of mutual understanding between polarised and entrenched viewpoints; investigating young people's relationships with the older generation;
      5. How to adult – finance, housing and the difficulties of becoming a young adult;
      6. Tackling Taboos – Sex and modern relationships – navigating the maze; portraying drug use and misuse in Wales in an honest way;
  • Content that works with unique and engaging individuals who can bring a social media following with them when creating content about their passions;
  • Animation – we are interested in seeing ideas which can deliver striking and thought-provoking content or comedy from new animation talent;
  • Informative and fascinating content delivered in a witty and enthusiastic manner on subjects such as books/reading, history, language, science, poetry in a format which is native to social.

The emphasis in this round is on comedy/humour and strong factual stories.

Diversity of voice and representing the broad range of experiences of young people is important to Hansh and we're very keen to ensure roles in front and behind camera for BAME, LGBT and disabled content makers.

We are not currently looking for content which is: lifestyle, video games, film and tv, sport, vlogs, tips/how tos, pranks, opinion videos in this round. You should clearly show:

  • Who are the target audience that are likely to respond to the content and share it?;
  • Why is Hansh is the best platform for it, and why now?;
  • An outline of the content and visual treatment (you can supply this as a link to download from e.g. Dropbox/WeTransfer);
  • A link to a teaser video or previous work, especially if you are submitting a comedy idea, or where the talent is key to the content;
  • A draft of the shooting schedule and release date.

We require all ideas to be in a block of 5 x 1'-3' with additional content for social (e.g. stills, short clips). We are not looking for longer form content in this commissioning round.

The budget will vary according to the content, but we are looking to commission a strand of shorts for between £5,000 and £10,000 with a tariff of roughly £500 per minute. We may consider a higher tariff for more ambitious content.

Publishing and Production Schedule

The content would need to be published on Hansh between May and September 2018. We usually publish one video in each series of videos every 3-4 weeks so please allow for this in you draft production and publishing schedule.

Television Broadcast

Hansh content will be packaged weekly for television broadcast on Thursday night at 10:30pm, but the content should be focused primarily on attracting an online audience. The decision to include content on the Hansh programme will lie solely with S4C.

What if I'm not affiliated with or have a production company?

If you are an individual and would like to present an idea but are not currently affiliated with a production company, you will need to make an application through an established production company in this commissioning round. If you're not interested in doing this, or if it's not practical, you can also contact Antena or Boom Cymru, content providers for Hansh on an ongoing basis, who are also open to receive ideas.

How to submit an idea

If interested, please submit your ideas through the S4C Production Cloud by Friday 11 May 2018. You may submit more than one idea.

To discuss ideas beforehand, please contact Rhodri ap Dyfrig, Online Content Commissioner rhodri.apdyfrig@s4c.cymru.
