Welsh Cup 4th Round Preview

It’s the weekend of the 4th round of the JD Welsh Cup with eight games to look forward to, including our live tie from Jenner Park between Barry Town United and The New Saints.

gap Connah’s Quay v Buckley Town | Friday 19:30
Only a short six mile journey for Buckley Town as they travel to the Deeside Stadium to face Welsh Premier League outfit Gap Connah’s Quay in the 4th round of the Welsh Cup.

Buckley, who are currently 11th in the Huws Gray Alliance, have beaten high-flying MBi Llandudno to reach the 4th round.

In reaching the 4th round, Buckley haven’t conceded a goal in the three previous rounds – but have only scored 2!

Gap Connah’s Quay have won the Welsh Cup once, that was 87 years ago in 1927.

Guilsfield v Airbus UK Broughton | Saturday 14:30
The last time Guilsfield reached the last 8 of the Welsh Cup was in 2007/08 – but to do this again, they’ll need to beat Airbus UK of the Welsh Premier League.

Guilsfield have a good scoring record in the cup this season, scoring 3 or more goals in each round.

Airbus UK have never reached the Welsh Cup final – but Andy Preece will want to change this, with a place in the Europa League Qualifying rounds up for grabs for the Welsh Cup winners.

Guilsfield – Beat Glantraeth (4-2 w.a.y), Penrhyndeudraeth (3-2) a Cwmamman Utd (3-0)
Airbus UK – Beat Haverfordwest (0-2)

Cwmbran Celtic v Goytre | Saturday 14:30
Cwmbran are the lowest side in the Welsh Football Pyramid still in the Welsh Cup – and are currently 5th in the Welsh Football League’s Division Two.

Goytre are second in the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League and can rise to the top if they win their game in hand. In the 3rd round Goytre beat Caernarfon, who are top of the Huws Gray Alliance.

Cwmbran Celtic –Beat Llanwern (3-0), Llandrindod (0-3), West End (2-3) & Penrhyncoch (2-3)
Goytre – Beat Llantilltud Fawr (2-0), Dinas Powys (4-1) & Caernarfon (4-2)

Holyhead Hotspur v Bala Town | Saturday 14:30

Holyhead’s 2-1 over Welsh Premier League’s Bangor was the shock of the 3rd round, with Holyhead now welcoming Bala Town to the New Stadium for the 4th round.

Holyhead, 10th in the Huws Gray Alliance are competing in the 4th round for the first time since 2009/10 – when they lost 4-0 to Llanelli.

Bala have never reached the Welsh Cup final and Colin Caton and manager of the month, Steve O’Shaughnessy will want to change this for a chance of silverwear and a place in the Europa League Qualifiers.

Holyhead Hotspur – Beat Pentraeth (8-0), Y Waun (4-0) a Bangor (2-1)
Bala Town – Beat Carmarthen (1-3)

Afan Lido v Cardiff MET | Saturday 14:30

This will be the fourth home game for Afan Lido in this season’s competition.

MET are top of the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League, with Afan Lido in 9th.

MET have reached the 4th round in second consecutive seasons – losing to Airbus UK in the 4th round last season.

The teams have met once this season in a 1-1 draw… will they need penalty kicks to separate the sides?

Cardiff MET – Beat Llanilltud Faerdref (0-1), Penybont (4-2) a STM Sports (2-0)

Newtown v Cefn Druids | Saturday 14:30
Cefn Druids travel to Latham Park to face Newtown, the 2015 Welsh Cup finalists.

The Druids have a successful history in the competition, winning the cup 8 times – the last time in 1903/04.

Cefn Druids are 2nd in the Huws Gray Alliance and are hoping to return to the Welsh Premier League after relegation last season.

The Duids haven’t conceded a goal in their three Welsh Cup games this season.

Newtown are last year’s Welsh Cup finalists – losing to The New Saints 2-0.

The Robins have won the cup twice – in 1879 & 1895.

Cefn Druids – Beat Gresford (4-0), Porthmadog (2-0), Rhyl (1-0 e.t)

Barry Town v The New Saints | Saturday 17:15
The live Sgorio game comes from Jenner Park as Barry Town United take on The New Saints.

Both clubs have a strong record in the Welsh Cup, with Barry Town winning on 6 occasions and The New Saints on 5.

Barry Town’s striker, James Dixon has been on excellent form in the cup scoring 10 goals – 5 against Denbigh (3rd round) and 5 against Aberdare (2nd round) – can Dixon repeat the feat against the Cup holders?

The New Saints are the Cup holders and have recently won the Word Cup – although they have only won 1 in their last 6 Welsh Premier League games.

Barri Town – beat Llansawel (2-3), Aberdare (7-2), Denbigh Town (6-1)
The New Saints – beat Aberystwyth (3-0)

Port Talbot Town v Caerau Ely | Saturday 14:30
The Nathaniel Cars Welsh League holders, Caerau Ely travel to the GenQuip to face Port Talbot this Saturday.

Although Caerau Ely’s success last season, they are not performing well this time round – losing 7 of their first 13 league games – and are close to the foot of the table.

Their poor form in the league is in contrast to their cup form, scoring 12 goals in their 3 previous rounds and conceding only 1.

Port Talbot where Welsh Cup finalists in 2010 – losing 3-2 in extra time to Bangor City.
