This Saturday Aberystwyth will face Airbus UK in the first live televised game on the new artificial surface at Park Avenue with kick at 17:15 on S4C.
It’s remarkably tight in the WPL table as only one point separate these two sides with Airbus starting the weekend in the relegation zone, but only three points behind 4th placed Bala Town!
This will be the third league match on the new 3G surface and Aber are yet to lose or concede a goal since returning to Park Avenue (Aber 4-0 Rhyl, Aber 0-0 Llan).
Chris Mullock’s contribution has seen Aberystwyth’s reults improve since the goal-keeper joined on loan from The New Saints.
Mullock has only conceded once in his four WPL games for Aber this season (three clean sheets) and that goal was a cracker from Chris Baker (Cardiff Met).
Not only has he contributed defensively but it was Chris Mullock who scored the first ever goal on the new 3G surface at Park Avenue when he lobbed Rhyl keeper, Owen Evans from his own half with a spectactular strike.
This weekend’s game against Airbus will be Aberystwyth’s third in a run of six consecutive home games, so Matthew Bishop’s men must settle in quickly, and it looks like they have done so.
Airbus are down in the drop zone after failing to keep a clean sheet since their opening game of the season (1-0 vs Met) – no clean sheets in their last 12 matches (11 WPL, 1 MG Cup).
Scoring goals has not been an issue for Andy Thomas as only The New Saints (47) have scored more than Airbus (19) and Bangor (19) ahead of the weekend.
Both of Airbus’ live games this season have been great games (Rhyl 3-1 Airbus, Airbus 2-3 Llandudno) and we’ll expect nothing less on Saturday, although Andy Thomas will hope that the Wingmakers can get a win in front of the cameras which could help the team takeoff from the drop zone and rise up the league.
