James McClean scores the only goal of the game as Chris Coleman’s men finish third in their World Cup qualifying ground and miss out on a play-off place.

Wales’ dream of reaching the 2018 World Cup is over as James McClean scored the only goal of the game to send the Irish to the play-offs.

Chris Coleman’s men had the majority of possession, but a firm and physical Irish defence kept Wales at bay.

Ireland scored through dispossessing Ashley Williams and a Jeff Hendrick cross finding an unmarked James McClean in the penalty area.

Wales could have secured a play-off place with a win.
