WPL weekend preview

Newtown vs Barry Kenton 3

While the top two enjoy a short break away from the WPL, the rest of the pack have a chance to close in on the league leaders.

Friday, 12 October

Aberystwyth v Caernarfon | Friday – 19:45
With only one point from their last three outings, Aberystwyth have slipped down into 9th position.

Since their impressive 3-2 win at home to Bala Town, Aberystwyth have not won any of their following four fixtures (3 WPL, 1 MG Cup).

Caernarfon, on the other hand, have only lost one of their last five matches, and the Cofi Army will expect nothing less than three points on their travels to Park Avenue.

These clubs have not met in the WPL since April 2009, but we need to go back further to 1996 for the Canaries’ last victory at Park Avenue (4-5), when current coach Gavin Allen scored for the Black & Greens.

Llanelli v Cardiff Met | Friday – 19:45
Llanelli and Cardiff Met will meet in the top flight for the first time on Friday night.

Following their away win last Saturday, Llanelli are now only a point behind Carmarthen and Llandudno, and the Reds could climb out of the bottom two this weekend.

Cardiff Met have suffered from a few goal-keeping errors this season and have only managed one clean sheet since January.

Bala Town v Newtown | Friday – 19:45
Newtown are on a strong run of four consecutive wins (3 WPL, 1 MG Cup), and the Robins could go level on points with TNS if they were to win on Friday.

Chris Hughes’ team have won all of their home matches this season (including a 2-0 win against Bala), but have only secured one away win in five on the road, which was against bottom side Llanelli.

Bala also boast a perfect record at home this season, and Colin Caton’s crew can climb above Newtown if they are to pick up the three points at Maes Tegid.

Saturday, 13 October

Barry Town v Carmarthen | Saturday – 14:30
Carmarthen travel to Barry in search of their first ever win at Jenner Park in the WPL.

The Old Gold are on a disappointing run of five games without a win in all competitions which has seen them drift to the bottom two.

Barry Town are another club who have a 100% record at home in the league this season and are looking to continue their push for a Top Six spot come the split.
