WPL weekend preview

Barry vs Nomads Away45

Only three points separate the WPL top four, and with league leaders Connah’s Quay competing in the Irn Bru Cup over the weekend, will it be Barry Town or The New Saints that can capitalise on Saturday…

Saturday, 17 November

Llanelli v Cefn Druids | Saturday – 14:30
Llanelli will hope to bring their run of five consecutive defeats to an end as they welcome Cefn Druids to Stebonheath Park on Saturday.

The Reds have only won twice in 14 league matches this season, but one of those wins came in the reverse fixture at The Rock back in August – Cefn Druids 2-3 Llanelli.

Huw Griffiths’ Druids have gone four games without defeat and now look to close the seven point gap between themselves and Aberystwyth (6th) in the eight games left until the split.

Llanelli haven’t lost a league game at home against Cefn Druids since 2004.

Llandudno v Carmarthen | Saturday – 14:30
After eight WPL games without a win, 11th placed Llandudno need a win to go level on points with their opponents Carmarthen this weekend.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher grabbed a brace on his debut for Llandudno last weekend as they lost 2-4 at home to Bala Town, and the experienced new-signing is now Llandudno’s joint top scorer in the WPL this season after only one game!

Carmarthen will still be kicking themselves after throwing away a 2-0 lead to eventually lose 2-3 against Cefn Druids last weekend.

The reverse fixture ended goalless earlier this season, but Llandudno will feel confident having won their previous three home matches against the Old Gold.

Bala Town v Aberystwyth | Saturday – 14:30
These are two clubs who have been in fine form recently – Bala Town have only lose one in eight in the WPL – while Aberystwyth have won four on the bounce for the first time since 2014.

Since losing 3-2 to Aberystwyth in September, Barry Town are the only club to beat Bala in the league, and Colin Caton’s side are now level on points with The New Saints.

Aberystwyth are unbeaten in five matches and are pushing for a place in the Top Six for the first time in four seasons.

Barry Town v The New Saints | Saturday – 14:30
Halfway through November, and who would have predicted that Barry Town would be three points clear of TNS!?

Gavin Chesterfield’s men are on a five match unbeaten run (won 4, drawn 1) and the seven time WPL champions are challenging for the title once again.

Barry have come along way since their opening weekend 5-1 defeat against The New Saints.

TNS sailed to their 12th title last season, their seventh on the bounce, but are having a shaky spell having lost four of their 14 league fixtures.

The Saints have not lost more than four WPL games in a season since 2007/08 when they lost six times in a 34 game season and finished as runners-up behind Llanelli.

But it’s been 17 years since The New Saints lost a league match at Jenner Park (October 2001).

Caernarfon v Cardiff Met | Saturday – 17:15 (S4C)
The Cofis and the students go head to head on Saturday night in a vital game in the race for the Top Six.

Both clubs start the weekend in the bottom half, hoping to close the gap on 6th placed Aberystwyth.

Cardiff Met are in their third season in the WPL, and having fallen at the final hurdle in the play-off final in their last two seasons, they had certainly set their sights on European qualification this time around.

But having reached the Top Six in both previous seasons, Cardiff Met find themselves down in 8th place with eight games to go until the split.

Caernarfon are also targeting the Top Six in their first season back in the Welsh Premier League.

The Canaries claimed a marvellous away victory against TNS last weekend to bring a run of six games without a win to an end.

It was a Nathan Craig penalty that secured the win for the Cofis at Park Hall (0-1) – and that was the same story when Caernarfon met the students earlier this season – Cardiff Met 0-1 Caernarfon.
