On this day in 1956 Portsmouth took on Newcastle United in the first Football League match played under floodlights.
The use of floodlights had been in use since the late 1870s with Darwen FC and Sheffield United, amongst others, experimenting with floodlit matches on dark wintry afternoons.
However the Football League refused to sanction their use and it wasn’t until the 1950s when the popularity of floodlit friendly matches was such that the blazered committees decided that perhaps floodlights were actually a good thing!
The first ever Football League game under floodlights came at Fratton Park, Portsmouth but unfortunately for the home side, their historic day ended in defeat as Newcastle ran out 2-0 winners.
On this day in 1966, Swansea Town played their first European match on home soil as Slavia Sofia visited the Vetch.
