Majority see the need for Welsh language TV channel

08 November 2010

A majority of people in Wales believe there is a need for a Welsh language television channel and that S4C is important in safeguarding the future of the Welsh language.

These are among the findings of an opinion poll commissioned by the S4C current affairs programme Y Byd ar Bedwar to be broadcast tonight Monday 8 November at 9.30pm.

The YouGov poll found that 55% of respondents believed there was a need for a Welsh language channel – 80% of them being non-Welsh speakers - while 25% felt it was not needed.

A total of 55% also agreed S4C was important in safeguarding the future of the Welsh language while 22% disagreed.

YouGov interviewed a sample of 1,206 adults across Wales. Just over 200 of them were Welsh speakers and 80% of those felt S4C was important to Wales.

Arwel Ellis Owen, S4C’s Chief Executive, said, “The results show the strength of appreciation of S4C by the people of Wales, whatever language they speak.”
