S4C celebrates International Disability Day

02 December 2010

S4C will mark The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Friday, 3 December in a range of programmes and community activities.

The channel has joined four other broadcasters – BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky – to put people with disabilities at the heart of their television schedules for the day.

The broadcasters are working together to mark the day as part of their broadcasting commitment as members of the Broadcasters and Creative Industries Disability Network.

S4C Chief Executive Arwel Ellis Owen explains: “S4C launched its Diversity Action Plan earlier this year and our programme service on 3 December is part of the Channel’s pledge to reflect society in all its diversity.

“We hope that the features and programmes we have scheduled will highlight some of the issues relevant to disability and portray the bravery determination of people with disabilities which make their live stories relevant to us all.”

S4C’s programming will include features in its two magazine series, the afternoon show Wedi 3 and the evening flagship Wedi 7.

The afternoon show Wedi 3 features Marvis Thomas of Brynaman as she goes on a computer course for people with disabilities while Wedi 7 meets the Wales Deaf Football Team.

Later in the evening, there’s another opportunity to enjoy the acclaimed documentary in the O’r Galon series about Frank Letch. Born without arms, this Welshman’s disability has never stopped him from leading a full and remarkable life which led to being elected Mayor of Crediton near Exeter at the aged of 65.

S4C’s touring show for the younger children, Nadolig Cyw a’i Ffrindiau - Christmas with Cyw and Friends - will also provide a British Sign Language interpreted performances at Y Stiwt, Rhosllannerchrugog near Wrexham on Friday.
