An app to take you to sacred places

20 February 2013

S4C and Cwmni Da have launched a free new iPhone and iPad app which accompanies the S4C series, Llefydd Sanctaidd.

During the six programmes in the series we've followed Ifor ap Glyn as he's travelled far and wide over the UK on the trail of sacred places.

The sacred places that Ifor's visited have varied from ruins to islands, trees to caves, and in the last episode on Sunday 24 February he will be looking at saints and relics.

Now, with the aid of the new app you can set off on your own pilgrimage to one of the 37 sacred places visited during the series. Using the device’s GPS technology, you can follow a route to each site, browse images, and read about the history of some of Britain’s most sacred buildings, shrines, and natural features. Each location becomes easily accessible with full directions, maps and visitor information – everything you need for a great day out all in one place.

Download the app free of charge now, from itunes.com/llefyddsanctaidd

Huw Marshall, Digital Manager for S4C said:

“This new free appp shows how the digital fund can boost the digital landscape in Wales. This new resource will mean that the viewers can enjoy the series beyond it's on screen life."

"An English version will be launches soon which will include all the places that are included in the print version. The profit from this version will allow us to invest in more similar projects in the future."

Llion Iwan, commissioner for factual programmes on S4C said:

"Llefydd Sanctaidd has been a great series which has show us 38 holy places all around Britain. I hope that the viewers will now be downloading the app after the last episode of the series this Sunday, and start planning their trips to the holy places."

The Welsh language content for this app is translated from Nick Mayhew-Smith’s bestselling book, ‘Britain’s holiest places’. An English language version is in production, which will contain all 500 sacred sites listed in the book and will be on sale for £5.49 from the app store.

Don't forget to watch the last episode of the series on Sunday 24 February at 8.30.
