Barcelona Beefeater Festival Awards Gruff Rhys

Gruff Rhys' latest music documentary, American Interior, has scooped one of the main prizes at the Beefeater In-edit Festival 2014. The film was commissioned by S4C and Film Cymru Wales.

American Interior was names the winner in the Best International Music Documentary category, at the festival which was held for the 12th time this year in Barcelona from 23 October to 2 November.

The documentary follows musician Gruff Rhys as he sets off on a journey from Waunfawr in North Wales to America and across the continent as he follows the footsteps of his distant relative from the 18th Century, the adventurer John Evans.

A spokesman for the festival said:

"The International Competition Jury of the 12th edition of Beefeater In-Edit Barcelona International Music Documentary awards the prize for best music documentary to American Interior for its bravery in crossing formats, mixing live performances with cinematographic structure.

"It inspires musicians and film directors to try new ways of telling stories."

American Interior is a bilingual project, and the Welsh version, I Grombil Cyfandir Pell - American Interior was broadcast on S4C this September.

Llion Iwan, the documentary's commissioner for S4C said:

"Gruff Rhys is a gifted raconteur. Pair this with his great musical ability and you can see how this wonderful music documentary was created, sharing and old story, and making it relevant to audiences across the world today.

"With Dylan Goch's directing vision the film is a fantastic feat, and indeed a feast for the senses. Congratulations to Gruff and everyone who worked on the film for winning this prestigious prize, and for putting Wales on the map again."
