One step closer to Central Square

On Monday (25 February 2019) 34 S4C technical staff will transfer to the employment of the BBC. This is the latest step as the channel prepares for co-location with the BBC in Central Square, Cardiff at the beginning of 2020. From then the BBC will be responsible for broadcasting and distributing S4C content, on television and online. The BBC will also be responsible for the remainder of S4C's technical infrastructure.

In thanking the staff transferring to the BBC's employment under TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations) S4C Chief Executive, Owen Evans said: "A large number of the transferring staff have given a lifetime of service to S4C. We have seen a big change in technology over the years and I am extremely grateful to all of them for their work. Staff have led on the introduction of new services, such as S4C Clic, our web broadcasting and today our ability to operate from anywhere where internet access is possible.

"Between Monday and 2020 these staff will continue to ensure that S4C content reaches our viewers from Parc Ty Glas. Then in 2020 a new phase will start where all our technical services are based in Central Square. There is a lot of work to do before that, but I know that we will be able to rely on these dedicated staff.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director BBC Wales said: "I'm delighted to welcome the team into the BBC Wales family; we're really looking forward to working with them. By bringing these departments together, we'll be ensuring a high-quality level of service for S4C as well as strengthening our skills base and expertise across a range of technical and broadcast activities. I'd like to thank colleagues at S4C and BBC Wales for the preparations they've undertaken as we look ahead to this new chapter and we'll continue to work closely during the transition."

S4C will continue to commission and schedule as usual, the channel's headquarters will remain at Canolfan S4C yr Egin, Carmarthen and an office will continue in Caernarfon as well as Cardiff.

S4C will have approximately 25 staff working from the offices in Central Square – including, the Presentation, Promotion and Commercial teams.

The office of the Chief Executive, the Legal, Finance, Communications, Human Resources and Business Affairs teams relocated to the S4C Centre in September 2018 – a total of 55 posts.
