Gethin Jones is the 2021 Mastermind Cymru Champion!

This week, Mastermind Cymru's series reached the finishing line as Gethin Jones from Cardiff claimed the title of the 2021 Mastermind Cymru Champion in a stiff competition on S4C on Wednesday the 3rd of February.

After months of revising, only two short rounds stood between the four competitors and victory.

The other three finalists were Tom Cosson, a Civil Servant from Talybont, with his specialist subject on Welsh castles, Gwenno Hughes, who works freelance in the media industry in Cardiff, answering questions about The Lord of the Rings Films and Geraint Efans, an Architect from Dinorwig near Caernarfon who chose the history of rock climbing in North Wales.

However, only one trophy was up for grabs, and it went to Gethin Jones, Front of House Staff Inspector at the St Fagans National Museum of History who chose the life of Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who allegedly shot John. F. Kennedy in 1963, as his specialist subject:

"The killing of JFK was probably the single most significant incident in the latter half of the twentieth century. And in the middle of it, an insignificant, young man, a few weeks after his twenty-fourth birthday. "

This is not the first time Gethin has tried this famous quiz, as he appeared on Mastermind's English language programme 30 years ago, too!

In his specialist subject round, he scored 11 points without passing on any question. And as the final competitor, he had to hit 20 points in the general knowledge round to win the trophy. He managed to reach 22 points without passing once again.

And throughout the series, Gethin did not pass on any question. So, has he been tactical with his eyes on the trophy from the start?

"Tactically, certainly...I don't think anyone who has taken part has really thought they were going to win. It's true that taking part is the most important thing.

"But if you want to succeed, there are some rules - don't think too much, follow your instincts and if you have any hope of not passing, don't do it."

And how was it to take part in the competition this time?

"It was a great experience – difficult to know what to expect. Especially during this period, even though I've been lucky to carry on working, the world isn't the same. So it was lovely to meet new people who like the same type of things throughout the rounds…Especially those competitors who've learned Welsh as a second language."

Gethin admits his achievement hasn't quite sunk in yet:

"What was amazing was going back to the chair after winning. Walking to the chair with the prize was the only time I realised 'Wow, I've won!' And it was straight back to reality then, and not able to tell anyone. So only in those few seconds I really realised."

Betsan Powys, the competition's quizmaster, says:

"What an interesting crew of competitors, a wide range of specialist subjects and a deserving winner! Gethin's eyes was on the prize from the first round, and I'm over the moon that he got his hands on the prize 30 years after going for it the first time. What an achievement."

Congratulations to Gethin!
