21 April 2021

Molly Sedgemore from Hirwaun is the first winner of the S4C News Scholarship.

22-year-old Molly, who is about to graduate from Cardiff University in Journalism and Communication, will spend three months working for S4C's new Digital News Service.

The aim of the scholarship is to nurture and develop new voices interested in pursuing a career in Welsh language journalism.

"I've always loved reading and writing." said Molly. "Since starting the course at the University I have come to feel incredibly passionate about journalism.

"I've had so many good experiences on the course - both academic and practical, and I feel ready to embark on my career in a field that is more relevant than ever before. "

"I was shocked when I found out I had won the scholarship and couldn't believe it!

"I'm so grateful to have this opportunity. It's a great chance to get hands-on experience with a team of journalists. "

"Working on a completely new service is also very exciting, and having this opportunity to develop my confidence and skills in the Welsh language is invaluable."

"It is an exciting time to work in journalism and - News of all kinds is important to everyone. S4C's new Newyddion S4C app allows you to get the latest news at your fingertips any time of the day.

"I feel very lucky to be able to work on the new service and can't wait to get started.

"I'm definitely going to make the most of the opportunity. "

S4C's Digital News Service was launched on 6 April with a brand new app and website.

The service employs six journalists including an Editor, a Deputy Editor and four Digital Journalists.

Molly will start with S4C's Digital News Department in June.
