S4C Sport Bursary
(with Cardiff Metropolitan University, Rondo and Media Atom)

Introduction

S4C is keen to support individuals who are interested in a career in Welsh language sports broadcasting, and who are from a Black, Asian or ethnic minority background, by offering a bursary to study an MSc Sports Broadcasting course at Cardiff Metropolitan University. The bursary is in collaboration with Rondo and Media Atom.

The bursary is open to any Welsh student from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background who will be studying on the MSc Sports Broadcasting course at Cardiff Metropolitan University in the academic year 2022-2023. The ability and commitment to work through the medium of Welsh is essential. If necessary, please feel free to discuss any additional support you may need (e.g language improvement courses).

The bursary includes £9000 to cover the course fees from S4C, Rondo and Media Atom. You can find further details about the MSc Sports Broadcasting course below.

To apply for the bursary, you will be expected to submit a personal statement containing a career summary and experience either in written form (no more than 500 words) OR video (no more than 5 minutes long). You will be provided with a guide as to what you could include in the statement.

Requirements

Applications for the bursary are open to any individual who meets the following requirements:

  • a person from a Black, Asian or ethnic minority background
  • able to work through the medium of Welsh

In addition, any candidate will have to meet the course entry requirements, namely:

  • A good honours degree (usually 2.1 or above) ideally in a relevant subject area such as Sport, Broadcasting, TV, Film, English, Arts, Media, PR, Communications or Journalism
  • A proven passion for sports media and/or digital broadcast technology and a desire to discover and tell fascinating sports stories
  • In some special cases relevant industry experience, usually more than 3 years' experience in print, radio, online or television journalism, or in public relations/sports communications.Interviews will be conducted to select the bursary recipient.

The interviews will be conducted by a panel of S4C, Rondo, Media Atom and Cardiff Metropolitan University.

MSc Sport Broadcasting

Professionally accredited by the BJTC (Broadcast Journalism Training Council) this master's degree with a practical focus, designed and delivered by sports broadcast industry professionals to create practitioners of Sport Broadcast and prepare them to be industry ready for employment in sport broadcast journalism and across the sport media industry.

The master's degree course has been written in collaboration with sport broadcast journalists from the BBC, ITV, Sky Sports and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.We teach traditional broadcast journalism for the digital, new media age. Emphasis is given to live event production, broadcast journalism and multi-platform digital storytelling.
