Landmark broadcast as S4C rugby coverage goes global

12 March 2015

S4C's live coverage of the Wales v Ireland Women's 6 Nations international match on Sunday 15 March from St Helen's Ground, Swansea (kick off, 12.00 midday) will be webcast throughout the world on S4C's on-line service, s4c.cymru.

This is the first time that an S4C on-line broadcast of a rugby match has been made available throughout the world, although the Channel has previously broadcast national events such as The Royal Welsh Show and the Llangollen International Festival worldwide on-line.

English language commentary will be available worldwide.

S4C Sports Editor, Sue Butler said, "This is a landmark broadcast for S4C as we have not previously transmitted a rugby match to a world audience on-line. We are proud to be able to provide such a service for an important international match which may see the Welsh women's team lift the Triple Crown. We are delighted to welcome viewers from the four corners of the world to enjoy this broadcast which will be available with both a Welsh and English language commentary option.”

S4C has worked closely with the Welsh Rugby Union and programme producer SMS to make this global webcast on s4c.cymru possible.

As well as the live coverage, extended highlights of the Women's 6 Nations Wales v Ireland match will be broadcast later the same day on S4C's flagship sports show Clwb.

The Wales Women's team have so far won two matches in this campaign, beating world champions England and Scotland, and narrowly losing away to France.

The match commentary team for the live coverage on S4C's on-line service will be provided by Alun Jenkins and former Wales captain and full-back Non Evans Non Evans in the Welsh language; with ex Wales International) Andy Moore and Gêmma Hallett providing the English- language commentary.

Non Evans said, "I'm delighted to be part of such an historic broadcast and I hope the Wales Women's international team can show the world how good they are. The Wales' women team have been a revelation so far, having beaten the world champions England and Scotland. They were really unlucky to lose in France in a fantastic match in front of 12,000 passionate fans. I think Wales have a realistic chance of lifting the Triple Crown and developing into a major international force."

It's a bumper weekend of rugby on S4C, with the channel also showing the crunch Wales v Ireland RBS 6 Nations international on Saturday afternoon in Y Clwb Rygbi Rhyngwladol (A BBC Cymru Wales production for S4C).

Clwb on Sunday will also have live and rugby with coverage of the Wales Under 18 v England Under 18 at St Helen's in Swansea at 3.45pm (kick-off 4.00pm). This is also an SMS production for S4C.
