S4C rugby tour to support Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust

28 August 2015

In preparation for S4C's Rugby World Cup 2015 coverage, the channel will take to the road, with six former Wales rugby internationals, in aid of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust.

Starting Wednesday 2 September, the S4C tour will take in five clubs - in Bethesda, Dolgellau, Aberaeron, Newcastle Emlyn and Glanamman – to offer special training sessions with two former Welsh internationals, who are part of S4C's Rugby World Cup 2015 team.

Taking part in the training sessions during the tour will be Gwyn Jones, Arthur Emyr, Shane Williams, Dwayne Peel, Dafydd Jones and Deiniol Jones.

Also, S4C rugby presenter Gareth Roberts will compere an evening of entertainment for the community, including a Q&A session and a rugby quiz, with a chance to win Six Nations 2016 match tickets. Proceeds of the evening will be donated to the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust.

Dennis Gethin, Chairman of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust, and President of the Welsh Rugby Union, says; "We're very pleased and grateful to S4C for holding this tour to raise awareness and money in aid of the charity. It will certainly be a boost for the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust which now offers support to over 30 people, including two women players, and their families. Despite being injured on the pitch, some severely, I can say with hand on heart that nobody support rugby more than them, and I know that they can't wait for the start of the Rugby World Cup."

The Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust was set up in 1972. The main aim of the charity is to support players and their families who have been severely injured whilst playing rugby in Wales.

S4C's Sports Editor, Sue Butler, says; "S4C supports Welsh rugby at all levels, from grassroots to the international side, and we're very pleased to be providing live coverage of the most important competition in the rugby calendar, the Rugby World Cup. This tour will take us to the heartlands of the fans, to look forward to the competition but also to support a truly worthwhile cause in the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust, which we are very proud to be involved with."

The S4C tour starts in Bethesda on Wednesday 2 September, then in Dolgellau on Thursday 3 September. The following week S4C will visit Aberaeron on 8 September; Newcastle Emlyn on 9 September; then it ends with Amman RFC on Thursday 10 September. The events are open for all, starting at 7.15pm each evening, with proceeds and donations in aid of the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust.

S4C's Rugby World Cup coverage starts on 18 September, with the first game between England and Fiji live from Twickenham, followed by Wales' opening match of their campaign against Uruguay on 20 September. S4C will broadcast each Wales match live, and whatever their fate may be, the channel will also show one quarter-final, a semi-final, and the bronze final, as well as the 2015 Rugby World Cup Final live.
