S4C to show highlights coverage of Lions’ tour to New Zealand

03 May 2017

The British and Irish Lions face the ultimate test this summer as they travel to New Zealand to take on the All Blacks and Welsh broadcaster S4C will be with them every step of the way.

An agreement with Sky Sports – live broadcaster and the official licensee in the UK and Ireland - means that viewers will be able to enjoy free-to-air highlights coverage of each game in the Welsh language.

S4C will broadcast highlights of all 10 fixtures including the three test matches against the back-to-back world champions.

The exclusive free-to-air highlights will be shown on the same day of each game with an evening transmission.

Catrin Heledd will lead the presentation team, while Gareth Rhys Owen and Wyn Gruffydd will share commentary duties.

S4C's coverage, produced by Sunset and Vine Cymru and SMS Media, will start on Saturday 3 June, with the opening match of the tour against the Provincial Union XV.

The first test against the All Blacks takes place on Saturday 24 June at the iconic Eden Park in Auckland, while the second test will be held a week later at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington, on Saturday 1 July.

The final test sees both teams return to Eden Park on Saturday 8 July.

S4C is available on all platforms in Wales and on Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media all over the UK. A HD service can be enjoyed on a both the Sky and Freesat platforms.

S4C Content Commissioner, Sport Sue Butler said: “A British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand is something that only comes around once every 12 years and is a truly unique event in the world of sport.

"We hope viewers will be delighted that we are able to offer free-to-air highlights of every game on S4C.”
