Originally from Bethel in Caernarfon, Gwilym, 19, is currently taking a year out from his studies, with the intention of following an archaeology degree in Cardiff University next year. In the meantime he has joined the cast of drama Rownd a Rownd on S4C.
Gwilym is a member of the popular band Bandana which is known for combining easy listening lyrics with memorable melodies. There are four band members, with Gwilym playing the guitar, singing and composing many of the band's songs. Since forming in 2007 Bandana has won a few awards which include the best single from the Welsh magazine Y Selar, and the best band of 2010. Gwilym loves playing live gigs, especially on the Maes B stage at the National Eisteddfod.
This is the first time that Gwilym has turned to his mother Siân Harris for help with a song. Siân has been a Physical Education teacher in Brynrefail School for nine years, and although she confesses that she is very inexperienced in writing lyrics she enjoyed composing with her son for this year's Cân i Gymru competition.
Title: Garth Celyn
Gwilym decided to compose a folk melody based on Welsh history. Since he already has a structured idea for the chorus, it took Gwilym and Siân only one night to write the remaining lyrics. With the melody in place, and Gwilym determined to base the song on Welsh history, a local historical interest became the obvious topic.
Garth Celyn is known to be the house of Llywelyn the Great and Siwan, his wife. The song conveys the betrayal that Siwan felt when Llywelyn ap Iorwerth would leave her to go to battle time after time. It is up to the listener to choose whether the song has been written from Siwan's prospective or Llywelyn's.
