The multi award-winning film Martha Jac a Sianco that grabbed all the headlines at the Bafta Cymru awards this week is to be broadcast on S4C on Sunday, 7 June at 9.00pm.
The powerful film won an outstanding six Bafta Cymru awards as it swept the board at the glittering ceremony in Cardiff Bay on 17 May on an evening which saw the Channel win a total of 17 gongs.
Martha, Jac a Sianco, based on Caryl Lewis’ award-winning novel, deals with family inheritance and heartbreak. The film focuses on three middle aged siblings living on a farm in west Wales and their struggle for independence following the death of their mother.
The film scooped two of the most important Bafta awards: the Best Actor Bafta for Ifan Huw Dafydd (Jac) and Best Actress Bafta for Sharon Morgan (Martha).
The evening was a triumph for production company, Apollo, part of Boomerang Plus plc, as its production team won four other categories.
Richard Wyn Huws took the Best Director of Photography: Drama, Phil Williams, the Best Design, Stephen Williams, the Best Make-Up and John Hardy, Best Original Music Soundtrack.
First broadcast on Christmas Day, the dark, atmospheric film was shot almost entirely on location at Cribor Fawr, by Llandysul, in rural Ceredigion.
Produced by Lona Llewelyn Davies and directed by Paul Jones from a script written by the novel’s author, Caryl Lewis, the film also featured Geraint Lewis as the third sibling, Sianco and former EastEnders actor Carol Harrison as Jac’s girlfriend, Judy.
Apollo also won the Best Drama Bafta for the third and final series of Con Passionate, which counts the highly-prized Rose d’Or among its many awards.
Rhian Gibson, S4C Director of Commissioning said: “The cross-section of awards won by Martha, Jac a Sianco reflects both the creative talents and technical skills of those working on the film. We’re delighted to give viewers another opportunity to enjoy this landmark production.”
