Dim ond un wins Cân i Gymru 2016

05 March 2016

The winning song of the S4C 2016 Cân i Gymru competition is Dim ond un by Ffion Elin and Rhys Jones, who take home the Cân i Gymru trophy and a cash prize of £5,000.

The competition was held on Saturday 5 March in the BBC Cymru Wales studios in Cardiff and broadcast live on S4C. The show was fronted by television presenter Trystan Ellis-Morris and singer and television presenter Elin Fflur.

Ffion Elin of Menai Bridge says, “The song is about mental illness. The message of the song is that there is always someone there to help you and you're never on your own. Our music teacher at Ysgol David Hughes school, Gwennant Pyrs has won the competition on a previous occasion with the song Dal i Gredu and she has inspired us to compete.”

There was also an extra award this year, Tlws y Beirniaid, for the song picked by the three judges on the night. Cordia was awarded this prize on the night.

Elen Rhys, Entertainment Content Commissioner for S4C says, "Congratulations to the winner of Cân i Gymru 2016 and to all the performers for a night full of memorable and dynamic performances. It was wonderful to see a number of new, up and coming songwriters and singers competing as well as some familiar faces. Congratulations and best of luck to Cordia as they go on to perform at the Pan-Celtic Song Festival.”

Eight varied songs competed in the final: Caru nhw i gyd by Sion Meirion Owens, Actor Gorau Cymru by Barry Jones, Y Penderfyniad by Beth Williams-Jones and Sam Humphreys, Caeth by Sarah Wynn , Dim ond un by Cordia, Ar ei ffordd by Alun Tan Lan, Cannwyll by Geth Vaughan and Meddwl am ti by Kizzy and Eady Crawford.

This year’s panel featured singer Alys Williams, presenter Guto Rhun and composer Robert Arwyn.
