Mike Bubbins challenges himself to learn Welsh as he aims to be ‘One in a Million’

3 December 2025

Mike Bubbins has set himself the challenge of learning Welsh, as the comedian hopes to become one of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

But although Mike says he’ll take the challenge seriously this time, his daughter Elli reminds him that he has previously pledged to learn Welsh but did not keep to his word.

In the first episode of Mike Bubbins: Un Mewn Miliwn (One in a Million), which will air on S4C on 7 December at 20.00 and on demand on S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer, he attends the National Centre for Learning Welsh's class at Cardiff University’s School of Welsh.

During the series, the Mammoth star, who was raised in Barry, returns to his old school to see how the next generation of Welsh speakers are being immersed in the language.

“I was very nervous about my kids attending a Welsh school when they were little,” he says.

“That was my wife’s idea really.  I wasn’t sure about it at all, because English is important if you’re living in this country, but they love it.  Their generation is the generation that’ll fix it.

“I’d like to be one of our million Welsh speakers by 2050.  I think that’s realistic, you know, a third of the population.  I want to be one in a million, that’s the plan.”

During the series, Mike meets people from all corners of Wales who are new to the language and on their own unique journeys to becoming one in a million.

As his confidence increases, Mike, who hosts The Socially Distant Sports Bar podcast, says he hopes to present a pod in Welsh one day.

To seek further inspiration, he speaks with Nick Yeo, who hosts the Sgwrsio podcast for Welsh learners.

At the Tafwyl music festival in Cardiff, Mike is interviewed on television in Welsh for the first time and holds a question-and-answer session in the learners’ tent.

A number of familiar faces will also join Mike on his journey to learn Welsh, including Sir Gareth Edwards, Theo Cabango, Mari Beard, Aleighcia Scott, Eleri Siôn and even ‘Elvis’.

At the conclusion of his studies, Mike heads to the Senedd to ask First Minister Eluned Morgan whether he has done enough to count as one in a million.
