S4C viewers share their memories

06 September 2010

In a series of short programmes called Dwi’n Cofio (I Remember) on S4C, the people of Wales will share their significant memories from the past 50 years.

The short films, about 1 minute each, will preserve a moment of community or national history. It’s a chance for viewers to reminisce about significant events over the past half a century.

Dwi’n Cofio will be broadcast in between S4C’s schedules programmes over a period of 3 weeks, beginning on Monday 6 September.

The short pieces coincide with S4C’s new drama Pen Talar which begins on Sunday 12 September at 21:00. It follows the journey of two friends over half a century, through one of the most turbulent eras of Welsh history.

One of the contributors featured on Dwi’n Cofio is Mairwen Jones, who remembers when Dafydd Iwan came to sing in Ysgol Camael, Pembrokeshire on 12 September 1968.

“That was the first time I saw him sing,” says Mairwen, “He had such an impression on me. It was the first time I’d heard protest songs, and to realise the extent of the battle was had on our hands regarding the Welsh language.”

A football match at Ninian Park stands out in the memory of Alun Charles on the same day in 1971. He relives Brian Clark’s sensational goal which gave Cardiff a 1-0 win over the giants of Real Madrid.

The first day of Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd in September 1993 and Pope John Paul II’s visit to Wales in 1982 are other examples of memories shared in the series.
