Welsh-language broadcasters in major research project

16 September 2010

  S4C, BBC Cymru Wales and the Welsh Language Board have announced they’re to undertake a major joint research project to assess the changing use of media services among Welsh language speakers.

The project will explore:

* how usage of the Welsh language is changing among different sections of the audience, and how those patterns may develop in the years to come;

* how the pressures facing the language are impacting on the way consumers use the media - and how it may do in future;

* new opportunities to encourage greater use of Welsh language media.

Arwel Ellis Owen, Chief Executive of S4C, said: “In a challenging climate, it’s never been more important for the BBC and S4C to work together to serve our Welsh language audiences. I believe this important study can help both broadcasters to better understand the needs and expectations of our audiences.”

Menna Richards, Director of BBC Cymru Wales, said: “I welcome this timely study. There’s no doubt that all Welsh-language media services face big challenges as technologies develop and everyday use of the language evolves. This study will help us ensure we continue to deliver relevant, high impact services in the years to come.”

Meri Huws, Chair of the Welsh Language Board, said: “We are pleased to be working with BBC Wales and S4C on this research. Welsh-medium television, radio and websites provide a vibrant and contemporary context for the language, but with so many channels and websites to choose from in English, it is a challenge for Welsh broadcasters to keep their audience and attract new audiences. This research will give the broadcasters and language planners a better insight to what works best for the audience, which will hopefully lead to making

Welsh-language media more attractive to people.”

The research will be undertaken later this year, with findings expected early in the New Year.
