Rhos and District named 2010 Codi Canu champions

28 November 2010

Rhos and District choir has scooped the 2010 Codi Canu title at a special concert in St David’s Hall, Cardiff.

The concert held on Saturday 27 November was the culmination of six months of hard work by the four competing choirs, their celebrity conductors and mentors. The concert was broadcast live on S4C.

The S4C series Codi Canu has been following their progress as they overcame challenges set by the Maestro and judge Owain Arwel Hughes.

The four conductors and their mentors were presenter Beti George and Eilir Owen Griffiths (Cwm Tawe Choir); singer/broadcaster, Stifyn Parri and Geraint Roberts (Rhos a’r Cylch Choir). actress Donna Edwards who plays Britt in Pobol y Cwm and Delyth Medi Jones (Cwm Rhondda Choir); and actor and musician Neil 'Maffia' Williams and Mari Pritchard (Ogwen a’r Cylch Choir).

However, it was Rhos and District Choir under the baton of Stifyn Parri who emerged victorious, with Rhondda second, Cwm Tawe third and Ogwen Valley fourth.

Rob Nicholls, S4C Culture Content Editor said, “It was a memorable evening at St David’s Hall with all four choirs performing to a very high standard. Seeing the choirs joining together at the end was a fitting climax to a very successful series. The choirs, their conductors and mentors can all be proud of what they’ve achieved over the last few months.”

There will be an opportunity to see the Rhos and District Choir at the Thousand Voices Christmas Concert at the Llangollen Pavilion on Sunday, 12 December.

Highlights of the concert, organised by S4C and The Daily Post newspaper, will be broadcast on Wednesday, 21 December.
