Gruffydd Wyn is the winner of Cân i Gymru 2020

29 February 2020

The song Cyn i'r Llenni Gau has won Can i Gymru 2020.

Cyn i'r Llenni Gau by Gruffydd Wyn from Amlwch was chosen as the winner by a live public vote by viewers of Cân i Gymru 2020 on S4C tonight (February 29) from the Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Gruffydd Wyn is an experienced performer and took part in Britains Got Talent series when he made the finals and won judge Amanda Holden's golden buzzer

"I'm delighted that I've won, and can't believe it! Thanks to everyone who voted. This song was for my Gran who passed away recently, and I've found life very difficult since losing her. I hope that she would be very proud of me tonight. "

The 2020 competition was launched back in November 2019 with the closing date on January 3.

A panel of four judges, including; Bryn Fôn, Georgia Ruth, Ani Glass and Owain Gruffudd Roberts, narrowed the entries down to the eight songs that appeared in the final round on the Cân i Gymru programme.

But tonight the public had the last word by voting for their favourite song during the live show.

Gruffydd Wyn wins the Cân i Gymru 2020 trophy, a cash prize of £5,000 and the opportunity to compete in the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland in April.

Pan Fyddai'n Wythdeg Oed by Rhydian Meilir and Jacob Elwy took second place and wins a cash prize of £2,000 and Morfa Madryn by Alistair James came third with a prize of £1,000.

Siôn Llwyd from Avanti Media, who produce the programme on behalf of S4C said the iconic Cân i Gymru competition had once again highlighted how much musical talent exists in Wales.

"Congratulations to Gruffydd Wyn and to each and every one of the perfomers and composers who took part in Cân i Gymru this year – it has been an amazing night. The standard of the artists taking part bodes well for the future of Cân i Gymru and the future of Welsh music" said Siôn.
