Côrdydd wins prestigious title Côr Cymru 2022

5 April 2022

After three long years of waiting, Côr Cymru was back over the weekend with presenters Heledd Cynwal and Morgan Jones live from the Great Hall, Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

There were five choirs going head to head for the prestigious title Côr Cymru 2022 and a £4,000 cash prize.

The three internationally acclaimed adjudicators, Karen Gibson, Wyn Davies and Anna Lapwood had the last word deciding if CF1, Côr Ieuenctid Môn, John's Boys, Heol y March or Côrdydd would clinch the title.

A warm welcome was had as live choral singing returned, and Wyn Davies, adjudicator said: "For the first time I think in the competition, it was an unanimous decision found in favour of one choir."

Winning this year, and becoming Côr Cymru champions 2022 were Côrdydd from Cardiff, conducted by Huw Foulkes. With his head in his hands as Wyn Davies announced the winners, the shock was obvious to Huw.

'Winning Côr Cymru, is no doubt the highlight of Côrdydd's achievements. The experience of sharing a stage with four choirs of such high standard was exhilarating.

"It's an amazing feeling," said Huw Foulkes.

"After all the hard work, it proves that it does pay off. My thanks goes to all members for giving their all behind each note and word'

Choir practice hasn't gone without its difficulties due to the pandemic, but Huw Foulkes said: "Covid has presented an obvious challenge to choirs. But the desire to be a part of a choir didn't disappear and having a challenge such as Côr Cymru was key to ensure everyone came back together."

Before the big announcement, Amelia Anisovych a little seven year old girl from Ukraine stepped on the stage to sing a version of 'Let it Go' from the film 'Frozen' and Ukraine's national anthem.

A warm applause was given and a standing ovation from the audience for the little girl.

Huw said: "It was an emotional evening on many levels and hearing Ameliia singing touched hearts."

Award-winning TV company Rondo Media produced the Côr Cymru programmes for S4C.
