Further acclaim for Wales and South Korean partnership by the Royal Television Society

03 March 2016

A partnership between S4C, Awen Media and a TV company in South Korea has gained further acclaim as the Royal Television Society announced its nominations for the 2016 awards.

The documentary Dagrau o Waed: Rhyfel Corea (Tears of Blood: The Korean War) is up for an RTS award in the History category. The winner is announced on Tuesday 22 March.

This is the second nomination in a matter of weeks by a highly respected organisation.

In February it was announced that Dagrau o Waed: Rhyfel Corea had been nominated by the 2016 New York International Film and Television awards, in the National/International Affairs category. The winner of this award will be announced on 19 April.

Dagrau o Waed: Rhyfel Corea was produced by Awen Media, and is part of a partnership between S4C and the South Korean channel Jenonju Television (JTV).

This is one of four Welsh language documentaries made in partnership with JTV and S4C's Factual Content Commissioner, Llion Iwan, says that he wants to make more.

Llion Iwan, S4C Factual Content Commissioner says, "Congratulations to Awen Media on this RTS nomination, so soon after the nomination in the New York International Film and Television awards. The RTS Awards celebrate the best TV content in the UK, and I'm very proud to see this programme among them.

"We're also proud of our relationship with JTV. So far, working with independent production companies in Wales, we have created four powerful documentaries - programmes that, without this partnership, would have been difficult for S4C to make. This is one of the great advantages of partnerships, and working with international companies also means that S4C's reputation is seen across the globe as well as bringing the world's attention on Wales and the Welsh language. We want to do more co-productions and I'm very keen to continue this valuable relationship with JTV."

Another programme made in partnership with JTV is the documentary Philip Jones Griffiths: Ffotograffydd Rhyfel – a Rondo Media production. It documents the contribution of the Welsh war photographer who was responsible for some of the most iconic images of the Vietnam War. It was shown on S4C on Sunday 28 February, and is available on catch up on s4c.cymru

Another Awen Media production to stem from this relationship is Gohebwyr: Jon Gower. The programme, in S4C's 'Reporters' series, tells the story of Protestant missionary Robert Jermain Thomas from Llanover, who is a national hero in South Korea. Also in the Reporters series is the Rondo Media production Gohebwyr: John Hardy. In it we follow presenter John Hardy as he traces his father's experiences of fighting in the Korean War. This programme was watched by five million people when it was shown by JTV in South Korea.
