“Effi o Blaenau” breaks records - Biggest Opening Ever at UK Box Office for a Welsh Language Film

22 June 2026

Released to universal critical acclaim this weekend, Effi o Blaenau has proved to be a hit with audiences across Wales and the rest of the UK, delivering the biggest opening ever for a Welsh language film at the box office. On a limited rollout of just over 30 cinemas, the film broke the record previously held by The Feast (Gwledd), released in 2022. Effi o Blaenau will now expand its release, continuing to play widely across the Welsh territory and cities across the UK.

Directed by Marc Evans (Mr Burton), the film follows Effi, a young woman who learns firsthand the personal costs of our societal shortcomings, with a tour-de-force lead performance by up-and-coming actor Leisa Gwenllian who has received rave reviews for her film debut. Adapted from Gary Owen’s much-lauded monodrama Iphigenia in Splott - a modern theatrical classic staged extensively across Wales, England and internationally – Effi o Blaenau marks Marc Evans’ cinematic interpretation of the story, re-imagined for the big screen. The film is produced by Branwen Cennard. Executive producers are Catrin Cooper and Gwenllian Gravelle.

Synopsis: The film follows Effi, a young woman desperate to escape a town where the pubs are closed, the jobs have vanished, and her grandmother works night shifts in the local chip shop just to get by. A chance encounter in a Llandudno nightclub with injured soldier Lee briefly opens a door to something better. For a moment, Effi glimpses a life she never imagined — but the reality that follows is far tougher.

As she faces the future as a single, unemployed mother-to-be, Effi’s story exposes a stark social crisis: a system with too few maternity wards, too few midwives, and too many impossible choices made out of necessity rather than care.

Adam Price MS, Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy said:

“Both the anticipation ahead of the release of Effi O Blaenau, and this weekend’s box office success, mark a powerful cultural moment for Welsh-language film. It demonstrates the strength of our creative talent and the growing appetite and appreciation for stories rooted in Wales. As the first production supported by Creative Wales alongside S4C, it sets an exciting precedent — and we look forward to seeing this collaboration continue to flourish. Congratulations to everyone involved!”

Gwenllian Gravelle, S4C’s Head of Film and Drama said:

"I’m thrilled that Effi o Blaenau has captivated audiences. It’s an exciting first step in bringing a new wave of Welsh‑language storytelling to  wider international screens."

Effi o Blaenau is a S4C presentation of a Tarian Production developed and funded by S4C, and Co-funded by Creative Wales. The UK theatrical distributor is MetFilm.

Effi o Blaenau will be broadcast on S4C, Clic and iPlayer later in the year.
