S4C has announced that it will expand its provision for learners by investing an additional £100,000 in a package of digital content to support those learning Welsh.
The investment is in addition to the existing provision offered as part of S4C’s Welsh-language learning service, across its platforms.
The announcement was made by S4C’s Chief Executive Geraint Evans at the National Eisteddfod on Thursday, 6 August, while speaking at a session hosted by the National Centre for Learning Welsh entitled ‘The Contribution of New Speakers to the Welsh Language’.
Geraint Evans said: “Those who choose to learn Welsh deserve every support, and research by the National Centre for Learning Welsh shows just how important many people consider S4C’s content to be as a vital resource for learning.
“It is a natural step for us therefore to review and continue to grow that provision for this important audience; the aim is learning while enjoying great content across our digital platforms.”
In the Autumn, S4C will launch an open call for original ideas from production companies to create new content for publication across S4C’s social media and digital platforms.
The announcement builds on the success of S4C’s ‘Dysgu Cymraeg’ (Learning Welsh) social media accounts. Their reach grew by more than 50% during the 2025-26 period, with the number of followers more than doubling over the same timeframe.
S4C will collaborate with the National Centre for Learning Welsh - already a strategic partner of the broadcaster - in preparing the content, ensuring it supports viewers at various stages of their journey learning Welsh.
For a year, the Centre has also been providing a Welsh Learning tutor to work closely with the broadcaster and the wider broadcasting sector, helping presenters, contributors and behind-the-scenes staff to learn and build confidence in using their Welsh.
Dona Lewis, Chief Executive of the National Centre for Learning Welsh, said:
“Over 20,000 people are learning Welsh, and there's a lot of interest from our learners in watching Welsh content, both for enjoyment and to reinforce what they're learning in their classes, and to build confidence in speaking the language.
“So the partnership with S4C is really important to us as we work together to create opportunities for our learners and new speakers to enjoy the language. We also want to support people working in the industry to strengthen their skills, and we're really proud to support the channel and the TV industry by providing a dedicated Welsh Learning tutor.”
The announcement brings together S4C’s ‘digital-first’ strategy and the goal of reaching one million Welsh speakers by 2050. Details of the package’s content will be announced in due course.
