S4C is pleased to announce the appointment of Catrin Cooper as its new Film Commissioner and Dafydd Llewelyn as Drama Commissioner.

Catrin Cooper is a filmmaker with over twenty years’ experience across studio features, independent production, development and international co-production.

She was Executive Producer on Effi o Blaenau, which broke UK box-office records for Welsh-language cinema, and is currently working on Star Wars: A New Hope / Gobaith Newydd, the Welsh-language version produced by Lucasfilm in collaboration with S4C and the Welsh Government via Creative Wales.

Her early career included production roles on major studio franchises, including Harry Potter for Warner Bros. and James Bond for Sony, before working as a Development Executive at Ffilm Cymru Wales. She later delivered ‘From Script to Cinema’, the first Welsh-language screenwriting course from NFTS Cymru, with support from Creative Wales and S4C. 

She is an alumna of the Rotterdam Producers Lab and NFTS Creative Business.

Dafydd began his television career as a member of the writing team for the soap opera Pobol y Cwm (BBC Studios), before becoming a Script Editor and later a Producer on the programme. Over the years, he has worked on series including Lan a Lawr (Boom Cymru), Stad (Triongl/Cwmni Da), Anfamol (BBC Studios), and Casualty (BBC Studios), before returning to Cwmderi as Series Producer from 2022 to 2025.

Following the creation of Sinema Cymru, a scheme to produce a Welsh-language feature film annually, S4C has established the two roles: one responsible for commissioning drama and soap operas, and the other focused on film. Co-funded by the Welsh Government through Creative Wales, the film scheme forms part of S4C’s wider ambition to deliver the broadcaster’s “More Than a TV Channel” strategy.

The appointments follow Gwenllian Gravelle’s decision to move on and pursue new opportunities, after seven successful years at S4C.

During her tenure as Head of Film and Drama, Gwenllian has made a transformative contribution to S4C’s scripted strategy and creative output, helping to define a new era of ambition for Welsh-language drama and film.

Catrin Cooper said of her appointment:

For me, that means helping to make S4C a destination for our filmmakers - somewhere they bring their strongest, most distinctive ideas, and know there is real ambition for the work. I’ll also keep looking outward, learning from other indigenous-language regions that have created further opportunities for their sectors, while building on the progress already underway here.”

Dafydd Llewelyn said:

“Joining the S4C team is a tremendous privilege, and I am looking forward to working with the production sector to deliver exciting and engaging drama content. As someone who grew up watching Welsh-language series and soap operas, I very much hope that I can contribute to this vitally important tradition.”

Welcoming Catrin and Dafydd to their roles, S4C’s Chief Content Officer, Llion Iwan, said:
