After seven years at S4C, where she has held the roles of Drama Commissioner, Head of Scripted, and most recently Head of Film and Drama, Gwenllian Gravelle has decided to move on to pursue new opportunities.
Gwenllian will conclude her day-to-day responsibilities on 8 of September, and will remain available in a transitional capacity to support S4C in the recruitment process for both a Drama Commissioner and a Film Commissioner until 8 of December.
During her tenure, Gwenllian has made a transformative contribution to S4C’s scripted strategy and creative output. She has played a central role in shaping and delivering an ambitious drama and film slate, building long-term strategic partnerships with producers, distributors and broadcasters, and aligning bold creative ambition with S4C’s strategic objectives to grow audiences and elevate the broadcaster’s reputation for premium scripted content.
Her commissioning track record includes a number of landmark productions: Dal y Mellt / Rough Cut, the first Welsh-language drama to launch on Netflix; Y Golau / The Light in the Hall, a major co-production with Channel 4 and one of the channel’s most successful drama titles; Craith/Hidden; and most recently Cleddau / The One That Got Away, a high-performing original in partnership with international distributor Banijay.
Her work has been widely recognised across the industry, attracting multiple awards and nominations including Broadcast, C21 RTS, BAFTA and the International Rockie Awards. She also played a pivotal role in establishing Sinema Cymru, a strategic initiative designed to revitalise the Welsh-language film sector through the commissioning of an annual feature film for both theatrical release and broadcast on S4C.
Gwenllian’s contribution has helped define a new era of ambition for Welsh-language drama and film, strengthening both its creative reach and international profile.
She intends to liaise directly with the companies she is currently working with to ensure smooth continuity across active projects.
We thank her for her outstanding contribution and wish her every success for the future.
