S4C celebrates eleven Bafta Cymru 2008 wins

28 April 2008

S4C productions have won a total of eleven prizes at the 2008 Bafta Cymru Awards.

Teen soap Rownd a Rownd won the award for Best Youth Programme, while Rhodri Evan won the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Balders in the light drama Cowbois ac Injans. Period drama Calon Gaeth came top in the Best Drama/Drama Serial for Television category, while Y Pris, S4C’s gangster drama, won the award for Best Original Music Sound Track.

Ray Gravell’s death in 2007 was a huge loss to the worlds of broadcasting and sport. BBC Wales producers demonstrated both their creative talents and professionalism under difficult circumstances with the moving tribute programme, Grav – Ray o’r Mynydd, which won the award for Best Documentary/Drama Documentary, and Angladd Ray Gravell, the broadcast of the rugby star’s funeral, which won the Best Live coverage/O.B. Team.

The single documentary Fel Arall, which looked at the lives of gay people living in Wales, won the award for Best Director, which went to Nia Dryhurst.

Holi Hana, a charming series about an agony aunt duck who runs a helpline for young animals, won the Best Animation category. The colourful website for younger viewers, Planed Plant Bach, won the award for Best New Media TV or Film Related.

A special episode from the comedy sketch show Mawr, Sioe P.C. Leslie Wynne, won the Best Light Entertainment category, while S4C’s coverage of point-to-point racing, Rasus ar Garlam, won the award for Best Editor.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s Director of Commissioning, said, “I’m delighted that so many S4C productions have won awards in a variety of categories. These awards recognise both the creative talents and technical skills of our partners in the independent production sector and BBC Wales. Warmest congratulations to all the winners.”
