Kath Jones is back in Cwmderi

17 September 2014

One of Pobol y Cwm's most iconic characters is about to return to Cwmderi.

As one of Pobol y Cwm's most popular characters ever, Kath Jones left the soap opera in 2007 after fifteen years. Now, in a very special story, the legendary character is back.

Siw Hughes played Kath Jones on Pobol y Cwm from 1993 until she left the series in 2007, but today we can confirm that Siw will return as Kath Jones for the special up-coming story.

"Hand on my heart, all I can say is that Kath is back from Spain for a funeral, but I can't say any more than that," says Siw Hughes, who's originally from Llangefni in Anglesey and now lives in Cardiff.

"It's very nice to be back. It's been very comfortable stepping back into Kath Jones's shoes. I've got a big soft spot for Kath; she's been good to me, and my career, and she's given me some amazing opportunities, I must say."

Pobol y Cwm have released a picture which confirms that Siw will be back for a special storyline that will be on screen this October as the soap celebrates its 40th birthday.

Shelley Rees who played Stacey Jones, Kath's daughter, will also be returning for the birthday.

"The best thing about being back is working with Shelley Rees, Arwyn Davies and Maria Pride again – the old family together again!

"We're reminded how much fun it is, and we bounce off each other as actors, so I hope that will come through on screen."

Since she left Pobol y Cwm in 2007 Siw has been busy with many projects, including playing the lovely Jemma Haddon on the S4C series Gwaith/Cartref, working on productions for Sherman Cymru including Fe Ddaw'r Byd i Ben and Trwy'r Ddinas Hon. She also plays Beti Brysur (Busy Beti) in S4C's popular children series, Llan-ar-goll-en.

"It was difficult to leave Pobol y Cwm but it was my decision because I wanted a new challenge, as an actress. I felt I'd played Kath for long enough, and people were starting to think that I actually was Kath! Which is a massive compliment of course, but I'm not in the same field as Kath – I'm not half the woman she is!"

So the speculation begins. Why are Kath and Stacey back? Whose funeral is it? Come over to Cwmderi to find out more…
