Apps and online – S4C reveals new on demand services

20 July 2015

S4C has revealed big changes to its online on demand services including new apps and on demand website.

Today (Monday 20 July) S4C has revealed its first on demand app for Android, alongside an update to the iPhone app, and a new-look on demand website:

• The first on demand app for Android

• New app for iPhone

• New on demand website

This is S4C's first Android app for watching the channel's content live or on demand on thousands of different smart phone and tablet devices. As well as the Android app, S4C have also issued a new iPhone app which is also released today.

The new app allows access to S4C's programmes live and on demand, along with the latest information about the channel's programmes and activities, and a Cyw Tiwb button to watch programmes from the pre-school service Cyw at any time of day or night.

On the s4c.cymru website, the on demand site looks dramatically different, with a new design which puts focus on images and the available programmes are easy to find. It also adapts perfectly for any screen size.

The website was developed by S4C's own in-house team, who worked alongside Moilin to create the new apps. This is an important development for S4C's on demand service who has seen a huge growth in the number of people accessing content on mobile devices via the app.

Ian Jones, S4C Chief Executive said; "We are announcing the development to S4C's online on demand services during a period when the discussion about the channel's future funding is receiving a lot of attention. Although this of course is of the utmost importance to the channel, the Welsh language and to an important part of the Welsh economy, we must continue to ensure that the channel's content is available in the way people want to watch.

"The numbers who choose to watch S4C online and on mobile devices has increased dramatically in recent years. With this in mind I'm very proud that these developments will enhance the experience for those watching our content. With the new app for Android users, and a new look app for iOS users, there are more opportunities than ever to watch S4C over the coming months – be it the coverage from The Royal Welsh Show, the National Eisteddfod, Rugby World Cup or the next series of Y Gwyll/Hinterland.

"Viewing habits are changing, and it's more important than ever that S4C offer opportunities for the audience to find the channel online in many different ways in order to meet their needs."

Watch S4C live or on demand online now at s4c.cymru or download the app free from Google Play or the App Store. S4C is also available online on BBC iPlayer, TVCatchup.com and TVPlayer.com
